Community Support Service – Supported Living & One to One Support

Mencap in Kirklees Community Support Service provides a high-quality support service to enable people with additional needs to live more independently, either in their own flat in a supported living scheme or in a shared house, in their own home or in the community.

Our shared houses are large, detached accommodation where people have their own bedrooms and share the other spaces communally.

We strive for and have an excellent reputation for delivering support that is flexible, innovative and responsive by putting the person at the centre of everything we do.

Services can be provided from as little as 1 hour a week to a 24 hour package, every day of the year on a regular or bespoke basis.

Our qualified and experienced support staff work with people, their family carers and people that are important to them to shape a personal support plan. It’s important to us that the people we support have maximum choice and control from the service they receive. This support can also be used as an alternative to day services by a direct payment or private arrangement.

The community support service currently costs £15.56 an hour, sometimes more if people have very or extremely complex needs and is funded in a variety of ways:

  • Through Social Services funding via an assessment. To find out if you are eligible for funding you can telephone Gateway to Care 01484 414933 for more information.
  • Through personal funding, also known as Self-Funding
  • Through Personal Independence Payments and Direct payments.

In all our supported living accommodation we have staff available 24/7 on hand to assist with daily issues and people have their own one to one support to achieve their other outcomes such as shopping or social time.

John - All About Me

I’m John and I live in my own flat in a supported living scheme with the assistance of my support workers. They support me with my money, maintaining my home, cleaning and shopping and following my interests. I like music, preferably Elvis, The Beatles and Madness. I love day trips to Liverpool to follow the Beatles story, I know everything about them. It’s important to me that I look smart and I have a large collection of hats. I like going out to the pub for a drink and a meal. I don’t like action and romance films, jumping out of aeroplanes or bungee jumping. I don’t like the seaside, I don’t like the smell. I’m very happy in my home and it would not be possible to live on my own without my support team.
