What is the Kirklees Safe Places scheme?
The Safe Places scheme is to help vulnerable people when they go out. Sometimes when we go out things can happen and you need help but there is no one around to ask. You might have lost your bus pass or someone has been unkind and you feel upset and afraid. A Safe Place is somewhere you can go to for help if this ever happens to you.
How can a Safe Place help?
You can apply to receive a Safe Places card. You can write up to 3 numbers of people you would want the Safe Place to contact if something happened whilst you were out and about. If you ever feel confused, frightened or need help when you are out you can go into any place that is open and showing the Safe Place logo. Staff at the Safe Place will listen to you and try to help. They can use your Safe Place card to contact someone else for you if it is not something they can help with.
Who can join Safe Places?
The scheme is for people who are over 16 and who might be vulnerable when they go out.
It is not for people who have very complex issues.
You might think you are vulnerable if you have;
A learning disability
A physical disability
You might also feel vulnerable for some other reason. If you are not sure if the scheme is for you call Samantha on 01484 340811 to have a chat.
Where are the Safe Places?
We have developed a network of Safe Places around Kirklees. Safe Places have a sticker in the window or have the logo displayed to let you know they are a Safe Place. Safe Places are all places that are open to the public such as shops, offices or public buildings. When you apply for your Safe Place card you will be asked if you want to be kept up to date with new Safe Place sites that join the scheme.
You can find an up to date list of all the Safe Places around Kirklees by clicking on this link
Or for a hard copy of our venues, listed by area click here
As new Safe Places join the scheme, they will be added to the map so why not save the link into your favorites.
When people join the scheme they are given a list of all the Safe Places venues. We know sometimes people might struggle to read this. They might not be able to remember the information on the list.
To help with this we hold tours. We arrange group tours from time to time and these are advertised through the newsletter.
Members can also book a tour at any time by contacting Samantha on 01484 340811. Where possible we are joined by a Police Community Support Officer.
We can meet the member in their area of choice. We will then visit all the Safe Places. This gives a chance to get used to the sign, ask any questions and meet Safe Place Staff. On the tour the Police Community Support Officer will talk about how safe and answer any questions. For more information contact Samantha.
For more information please visit the Police Website.
Can we be a Safe Place?
We are looking for organisations willing to become a Safe Place. Each Safe Place will receive a short training session, a window sticker so people with learning disabilities can identify them and on-going support from the Safe Places Co-ordinator. If you think you can help we would be interested in hearing from you.
